Benoît Peverelli | "CHANEL – Fittings and Backstage"
If you’re ever lucky enough to make it backstage at one of Chanel’s fashion shows, at Paris’ Grand Palais or a different exotic location, you might catch a glimpse of a certain photographer passionately clicking away as he weaves his way past models, celebrities and artistic director Virginie Viard. That photographer is Benoît Peverelli, and this book is an in-depth look at Karl Lagerfeld’s collections for Chanel from 2010 to his last, shown in March 2019, and reveals the remarkable continuation of the story of the house through Viard’s collections.
"CHANEL - Fittings and Backstage" is the long-awaited revised edition of the original sold-out book of 2018. Containing more than 2,000 photos...

“Every day is a work day” | June Leaf (1929-2024)

We’re deeply saddened to hear of the passing of June Leaf, an inspirational artist and dear friend to us at Steidl over many years. June was nowhere happier than in her studio-where she worked every day for over seven decades-and was deeply committed to her processes of creation. “The work isn’t finished” is the title of a book on her art we’re currently making: so too will June’s curiosity, te...

I can’t tell you how much Adams and his wife have inspired me today I am undertaking several 5x4 projects at the moment 2 in Northern Spain and at least one more in Northern England and all of them have as their central theme this idea of documenting the last vestiges of what went before hopefully before they disappear. Time is not on my side but I feel I need to leave this body of work behind for future generations to understand what we are doing to this planet. Adams and his wife are due recognition for such stellar work technically excellent and poignantly important.

Q: I always thought that a good deal of the character of Eggleston’s work was in the dye-transfer printing process. But, Mr. Steidl seems to say that all of the chromes for these books were ‘scanned’ with a Phase One system? How, then, do these images still have the ‘look’ of the images we have seen from the 70s?

Hey Gerhard, the photo you show in here of the green tiles after you guys corrected it, is beautiful. The one printed on page 205, on book 1, is borderline black. That being said, I got the feeling that the other photos on this publication feel like they are at least one stop underexposed, compared to the photos you show on the video. The feeling of the positive transparencies being backlit from scanning/projecting is missing completely on these books. Quite underwhelming given the price of this thing and the fact that it is year 2023. I miss the good old Steidl, when there were less books being produced and more care and attention to detail.

Poignant. Wonderful. But the underlying sadness I feel watching this makes me feel like there is something here that I am not quite getting. Adams' darkroom has been packed away. His tone is as though he is no longer photographing? Then a bit later he made a remark about those who can no longer see. If anyone has knowledge of this, can you direct me toward more?
